FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the history of VIWell and what is its role?
VIWell, and its peer organizations affiliated with VAMCs across the country, provide a mechanism by which non-VA funds may be allocated to VA research. Originally, the VA could not accept external funding. However, Congress recognized this constrained VA research and created the Non-Profit Corporations to provide a vehicle to legally fund VA research. Over the decades, the role of the NPCs, including ViWell, have grown far beyond simple funding vehicles. Today, NPC provides many of the same services as traditional Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and University research departments.
What is VIWell’s mission?
We view our mission as enabling research that improves the lives of veterans, either short or long term. We also place benefits to veterans as our highest priority. Additionally, we support our Medical Center, Richard L. Roudebush, and all of the fine researchers, clinicians, professionals, and staff. Finally, we are good stewards of the research funding entrusted to us by our partners.
Do you provide opportunities for Veterans to participate in clinical trials?
Absolutely, one of our primary directives is to increase access to clinical trials for veterans. This is especially true for our underserved populations such as rural veterans and those with housing instability.
I am a VA researcher with an idea, how can you help me?
ViWell helps researchers at every step of the process. If you are at the idea stage, we can help you understand the funding landscape in your area of interest and help you apply for funding.
Does VIWell help external partners find VA collaborators?
We welcome discussions with anyone interested in VA research or partnering with the VA. Whether you represent a charitable organization, government research group, diagnostic or device company, major pharmaceutical firm, or a process improvement firm, VIWell will work with you to develop a compliant and productive partnership.
