Our Story

Veterans Institute for Wellness (VIWell) was established in 1989 as the Indiana Institute for Medical Research (IIMR), a 501c3 organization, incorporated in the State of Indiana.

VIWell serves as the driving force in clinical research and development at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and ultimately helps to create medical solutions to improve and expand the lives of our country’s Veterans. Additionally, VIWell collaborates closely with our affiliated academic institutions including Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State, and Marion University.

Our Vision and Mission

VIWell’s mission is to promote and enhance research and education for the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana by:

  • Finding and managing research funding for projects and studies led by the VA’s most distinguished principle investigators, researchers and educators
  • Creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for our veterans who volunteer to participate in our research studies and education programs
  • Collaborating with industry leading pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies to ensure that Indiana Veterans have access to the latest and greatest medical innovation
  • Providing the highest level of operational and financial support to our research teams, academic partners

VIWell prides itself on its strong governance and financial discipline. The combination of a strong board consisting of both VA executives and prominent community members and annual audits by both an accredited external accounting firm and a VA oversight team ensures that all of our stakeholders, veterans, researchers, industry partners, and funding agencies know that VIWell will always advance its mission to improve the lives of veterans through cutting edge research and education
